General Rules of Basketball


Just like any other game or sport, basketball also have some rules that every player and every team must know and be aware of. Basket at the buzzer, start of dribble, substitution, time-outs, violations, foul, forfeit and injury time-out are the general rules that everyone, whether a player or their coach, whose involve in this game must learn.

Basket at the Buzzer. In basketball, a score may still be counted if the player shoot or throw the ball towards the ring before the sound of the buzzer which indicates the end of the game. Second general rule is regarding the start of dribble.  Dribble refers to act of tapping or bouncing the ball towards the floor. Therefore, a dribble starts when a player taps the ball towards the floor and touches it again. A dribble is said to be complete when the ball comes to rest on both hands of the player.

However, fumble, losing then regaining control, tapping the ball in order to gain control and tapping the ball from the control of another player are all not considered as dribbles. Next general rule is substitution. Substitution, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, is the act of substituting or replacing one person or thing with another. In this case, substitution refers to the act of replacing a player inside the court with another person in his team.

A player must inform the official scorer at the scorer’s table regarding the substitution and wait until the official signals him to enter the court. This usually happens during a dead ball. On the other hand, if the player just runs into the court without informing the official and waiting for its signal, a technical foul will be given to his team. With regards to the time-outs, two thirty second time-outs and three full one minute time-outs is given to each team. Any player in the court or their coach may ask or call a time-out. A violation happens when a player did not follow and /or obey, or broke the rule of the game. If this circumstances happen, a penalty is given. This may mean the loss of the ball by the team who committed the violation. The ball is then awarded to the team’s opponent. Third to the last general rule is foul. A foul is given when a contact from behind is happen because it is not a normal basketball play unlike the attempt to play the ball that does not place the opponent at the disadvantage because this may be considered incidental.

The player who is behind usually gets the foul because of his position in relation to his opponent and the ball. Then the rule about forfeit. Three situations may become the reason why a team loses a game by forfeit. First is if the team refuses to play the game after they are told to do so by the official specifically the referee. Second is if the team’s action prohibit the game from being played. Last is if the team does not able to have five members to start the game. Last general rule is injury time-out. An official may stop the game if any of the player inside the court got injured especially when the player is at risk and he immediately needs some professional assistance. As like what one of Albert Einstein’s famous quote says, “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else”. So now that you already know the general rules of basketball, you now have to play better than anyone else.
